~Pendle Hill~

17th December 2010

A fine sunny morning had me planning an ascent of Pendle in the afternoon. The time came, along with high cloud, so no blue skies on this occasion.

Pendle Hill

Pendle Hill

A different route in by road as the usual route had a nasty patch of ice on it and I didn't fancy trying to get across it. I parked in the car park in Barley and walked up through the village - see top photo.

The Way Up

It's most unusual for me to use this route from Barley. Normally I would walk up past the Ogden Reservoirs and maybe down this way.

Ice

Icy Beck

Every stalk of the reed has attracted an icy coating.

Pendle House

Desirable Residence

One of many homes in the shadow of Pendle on the Barley side. The sheep in the yard, just visible, are not real - or they've frozen solid.

Pendle Hill

Pendle Route

This route leads directly to the steps. The covering of snow will have arrived here yesterday (Thurs 16th) as the cold air progressed across the country. Daytime temperature today -3. I wish I could include the "degree" symbol, but it's beyond me at the moment.

Pendle

Pendle Steps

The first and only "Hello's" of the walk. I did spot one or two others, but our paths didn't cross.

Pen-y-Ghent

Pen-Y-Ghent and The Stile

It's cold and grey, little wind but really quite bleak.

Sometimes, on the way down, I pop the earphones in and listen to some relaxing music.
